Networks of Empires in the Amarna era. Multiscale analysis of major geopolitical groupings in the Near East under the supervison of Corinne Bonnet

Thesis project

This project follows on from Clément Dutrey's Master's 2 dissertation in Antiquarian Studies. Focusing on interactions between Near Eastern kingdoms during the Late Bronze Age, from the 16th to the 12th century BC, it mobilized theoretical frameworks relating to the study of International Relations and network analysis.

Without abandoning the traditional tools of Assyriology (textual analysis, epigraphy, philology, history), the aim was to exploit the specific features of diplomatic correspondence from the Amarna period, i.e. the second half of the 14th century, to highlight the structuring and destabilizing factors in the evolution of relations between states.

This thesis therefore aims to extend and amplify this research by reinforcing the use of network analysis to explore the driving forces and evolution of geopolitical dynamics in the Recent Bronze Age.
